Sand casting, also known as sand-molded casting, is a metal casting process characterized by using sand as the mold material. A one-time sand mold is produced, which may contain one or more impressions of the part. The mold cavities and gate system are created by compacting the sand around models called patterns, by carving directly into the sand, or by 3D printing. Molten metal is poured into the sand mold, then following solidification and cooling, the sand is broken away and the casting is removed. In most cases, the sand is recycled and reused.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF SAND CASTING IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
So, when is sand casting the appropriate method?
- When the production is suited for low and medium volumes
- Requires a +/- .030 tolerance in dimensional accuracy, moderate surface finishes
- Lower tooling costs are needed and the required volume of the product cast cannot justify higher tooling costs of permanent mold tooling
- When size and configurations dictate that the part can only be made as a sand casting
This table is a guideline you can follow to determine which process is best suited for you and your needs. It outlines key details including turnaround time, per-piece cost, and more.

KEY BENEFITS OF SAND CASTING
- Sand castings can be readily produced in nearly any ferrous or non-ferrous alloy.
- Low tooling cost: The relatively low cost of tooling makes sand casting a process of choice for lower to medium volume needs.
- Versatile process can accommodate many sizes, weights and shapes.
